How to make your car freshener last longer

Up to six weeks of scent is possible, but heat and impatience cut it short. Here's how to get the most out of yours.

Most people open the bag completely on day one. The freshener smells strong for a week, then fades fast. There's a better way.

Open it a little at a time

Cut a small opening at the top of the bag and pull the freshener out about 1 cm. Each week, pull it out a little further. The scent stays even and lasts much longer.

Watch the heat

In summer, a car parked in the sun gets very hot inside. Heat makes the fragrance evaporate faster. If you can, park in the shade or use a sunshade.

Let it hang freely

A freshener that rests against the windscreen or dashboard releases scent unevenly and can mark surfaces. Make sure it swings freely from the mirror.
